ABOUT NEBULON

NEBULON is the third concert in the JOLT cutting-edge music concert series for 2007. Internationally acclaimed Melbourne-based surround sound musicians Philip Samartzis, Robin Fox, James Hullick, BOLT and Myles Mumford will present Australian and International premieres of compositions created specifically for multi-speaker sound diffusion concert environments. Experience the sensation of sounds moving through the listening space. This concert is curated in a way that traces a pathway from raw machine sounds in the opening works - to the ultimate destination of sonic articulations of the Australian landscape. From 3pm on 22nd July 2007 at Bennetts Lane, audiences will be treated to a unique afternoon of world-leading state-of-the-art spatialised sound by some of Australia's premiere artists.

Surround sound first found its mass media footing in purpose built surround sound movie theatres. "Sound diffusion" (or surround sound) is defined as "the projection of sound through more than two speakers in order to create the sensation of sound moving through 3 dimensional space". Australian artists have been taking the lead internationally in aestheticising this technology as is exemplified by the remarkable collection of artist s brought together for the NEBULON concert. This is particularly apparent in the work of Philip Samartzis, where the Australian landscape is drawn into the surround sound aesthetic language.

Experience the sculptural and visceral quality of sound in JOLT's Nebulon concert:

James Hullick will premiere "KOR" a new work featuring the world first combination of surround sound technology with the "no-input mixing desk" (a mixing desk that, through the use of feed-back loops, is the only sound source). Hullick has presented, and will continue to present, world firsts in the aesthetic application of new technologies for each of the JOLT 2007 concerts. Hullick will also premiere "SWALLOW MACHINE" with Ensemble BOLT where live instrumentalists are sampled to create textures in noise.  On return from his latest international tour, sonic art guru Philip Samartzis will premiere "Spatial Dynamics No.1", a sumptuous work featuring field recordings of the Australia urban and rural environments. As Samartzis says, "I perceive the environment as a sophisticated sono-spatial experience that is thrilling in its diversity and complexity". Robin Fox will premiere "The Third Space", an abstract electro-acoustic work that is informed by Fox's statement that: "For producers of electro-acoustic sound works, the area of sound spatialisation has become a rich field of enquiry and has added an extra structural parameter to the traditional frequency, amplitude, texture and timbre. The use of space and various speaker arrays increases the potential for the production of psycho-acoustic phenomena and also introduces a new semiotic to the creation of sound works, asking what does it mean when a sound moves? And, how does the added structural parameter of space effect the composition of works and how these works are perceived?" Myles Mumford will premiere "Comfortable. Thoughtful. Reflection." - an electro-acoustic work that is designed "to create enveloping aural experiences that are individual to each audience member's perception."
